William Haynes - Training Plan No. 1

Goal

Improve race technique and lower lap times.

Conclusion

Some good driving. It will be important to study your braking technique to nail those braking points. A quick win will be just remembering the lowest gear used on each segment.

Assigned Task

We have been working on a new weekly training plan over the last month and we'd like you to be one of the first to try it.  We've had a few goals with this new format.

  • Remove the need for continual emails back and forth.
  • Have a fixed date when your next weeks plan is available.  Every week, no exceptions.
  • Refine and simplify the plan to focus on consistency and quality of driving.

To get the ball rolling we did an initial assessment of a fundamental driving skill - Braking Points.

1st key mistake: On the brakes for too long
Why it matters

Fairly self explanatory, too long on the brakes slows the car more than necessary, thereby affecting lap performance.

How much of a problem it is for you

About 30% of all of your mistakes can be categorised as staying on the brakes too long.

See an example in your own sessions

Take segment 5 you were on the brakes a little earlier than the reference and also your trail brake was a little slower.

Learn to improve

It is important to trust your speed through the corners and continually test the limits of the car.  Use your senses to gauge tire traction and note how early you can come off the brakes. When you get to these minuatae, experimentation and development of muscle memory on each corner is needed. Churning out the laps but with a definitive plan is necessary.

2nd key mistake: Gear too low
Why it matters

There are many situations on track where it is better to run the car in a higher gear to gain full potential from the engine.

How much of a problem it is for you

Gearing errors in general accounted for over 25% of your total errors.

See an example in your own sessions

Segment 4 shows how you are using 2nd gear while the the reference lap doesn't drop below 3rd.

Learn to improve

If the car is feeling sluggish or is revving too high, this is a good indication that you are in too low a gear.  If you feel this might be the case, start a new session and drive two laps, first in the suspected wrong gear and then one gear higher.  Check out your live delta, it'll give you your answer.

3rd key mistake: Braking too early
Why it matters

It goes without saying that braking later reduces your lap time(assuming you make the corner). Even corners where the reference lap approaches the braking phase at a higher speed, you sometimes brake earlier. Focus on keeping your steering wheel straight to be able to brake as late as possible.

How much of a problem it is for you

17% of the mistakes this week were due to braking too early and not quickly enough.

See an example in your own sessions

A perfect example can be seen through segment 1.

Learn to improve

As you practice the laps and start to learn your braking points. Compare regularly against the reference lap to see if you can afford to start braking a little later without sacrificing exit speeds. Remember it is all about retaining your pace through the corner and understanding where compromises can be taken to get the speed on when you hit the fast sections.
