Joseph Tran - Training Plan No. 2

Goal

Improve to league level racing.

Conclusion

Really nice the practice is paying off the times are good, the consistency is on the mark as well. Congratulations. To be behind only 0.7 from the reference lap at Sakhir is top! I assume you've noticed your theoretical best as well.

Assigned Task

Small changes such as mentioned in your first mistake will help to shave a few more tenths off your time. Test trying to stay a little longer at full braking, really only the smallest of fractions. This might just allow you to avoid the extended trail brake that is definitely a little slower than the reference lap. This with small changes to your braking point should be the focus of your training this week.

1st key mistake: On the brakes for too long
Why it matters

You often reduce your corner speed more than you have to by staying on the brakes for too long.

How much of a problem it is for you

A bit more than 24% of your mistakes are related to this so it's really worth paying attention to.

A good example can be found in segment 2.

An interesting error here. The braking is technically really good, fast to 100%, not too long at 100% then a nice trail brake. Practice trying to speed up the final section of your trail brake. You linger on the brakes for too long here and it is definitely affecting your times a little bit. Notice that you often engage a little pressure again around 20%-40% instead of always getting softer / lighter.

2nd key mistake: Braking too early
Why it matters

Braking points must be practiced until they become 2nd nature. Without the braking point nailed the line and exit speed will never to optimal.

How much of a problem it is for you

Same as last week around 18% of your errors are due to your braking points.

Your telemetry in segment 1 indicates that you are braking too hard and too early. It is a fast corner try your best to maintain your speed.

A few tips to learn braking points. Try to remember the turn number or corner name. Find an obvious marker, whether it be the start of a kerb, a marker board, even the 3rd painted red part of a kerb. Find these visual clues and ingrain them in your memory. If the markers aren't too obvious try changing the part of the car that you look at. Most use their front bumper as the 'part', try using the side mirror or shoulder location instead.

3rd key mistake: Turning in too early
Why it matters

The mistake of turning in too early is directly linked to not trail braking. When this skill is mastered then the available racing line will change significantly.

How much of a problem it is for you

Around 12% of your errors are linked to turning in too early.

A good example can be found in segment 2. Notice your line compared to the blue racing line.

Trusting your car is one of the most important things you can do. This means that you should specifically test using the track width and how to use that space to your advantage. For example, if you are on a track with wide turns, you can use this to your advantage by staying out wide until the last possible moment before braking and turning in. This will give you more space to work with and will help you to maintain speed through the turn.
