Noah Smartt - Training Plan No. 4

Goal

Improve consistency and race technique.

Conclusion

Again, a good time that you should be proud of. Your biggest win will be getting more laps in. Sessions of 1 or 2 laps really isn't enough. Hotlapping this is understandable but when you are under pressure in a race. Your corners need to be second nature when you are being distracted by the other drivers, changes in weather etc.

Assigned Task

Your biggest gains will come from avoiding staying at 100% brake pressure for too long. Study the reference lap on each segment and with quicker pedal action (mainly from forcing yourself to trail brake) try to match the 100% braking pattern of the reference lap. First attempt it on only a couple of laps to get a feel for it. Then work up to driving 5+ laps in a session.

1st key mistake: Braking too late
Why it matters

You often brake a tad later than the reference lap which means you overshoot the corner and lose a ton of time on the exit and gain very little on the entry. Try to be more patient and see where the reference laps brakes to optimise your braking point.

How much of a problem it is for you

This mistake happens a lot; in fact, almost 18% of your mistakes can be attributed to this.

Look at segment 3, Your late braking, coupled with the need to stay on the brakes a longer, makes this one of your slowest segment. Try to brake earlier to help you get on the same racing line as the reference lap.

Learn to improve

Brake a little earlier than normal and check your deltas to see if the extra speed that you can gain on the corner exit is beneficial over the subsequent segments.  Remember the most time is gained on corner exit not corner entry.  Biggest win for you here though is not staying on the brakes too long.

2nd key mistake: Too much braking
Why it matters

Braking too much is lost tenths on track. The balance between slowing enough for a corner and retaining optimal grip requires practice and experience, often a corner can be taken faster than expected.

How much of a problem it is for you

12% of your errors result from braking too much.

Segment 6 shows a difference between the reference lap and your braking.  You stay on 100% braking about three times as long as the reference lap.

Learn to improve

Focus on this one segment and try to resist the urge to brake for too long.  Luckily it near the beginning of the track, therefore a quick reset and you can attempt again.

3rd key mistake: Too late to full throttle
Why it matters

Full throttle is where the speed is. As long as you have control, the general aim is to get to full throttle as quickly as possible.

How much of a problem it is for you

With 12% of your mistakes arising from 'late to full throttle', it is now important to study this area.

See an example in your own sessions

Look at segment 5.  Even though you stay on the throttle better than the reference lap, the problem is that you are much later at 100% throttle again.

Learn to improve

Each time that there a lift, dab or hover, it indicates a lack of smoothness.  Very hard to achieve perfection but any time that you have a change that is more than 10-15% pressure or in your case here static at 85% for too long, these need to be looked at.
