Conclusion

When a driver is so close to the reference lap, it can get quite hard to coach a quicker lap. Your laps are a challenge to coach, but it's for all the right reasons. You have done very well overall, and you are within a second of the reference lap. This track is a hard one to nail, so it's even more impressive that you are so close to maximising that. A slight bit more refinement in braking points will help massively, and it seems like you will then be on track to beat a competitive reference lap.


Set Up Advice

I've heard that you're struggling slightly with front grip, and for a track like this, front grip is everything. What to change depends on where in the corner you would like more grip. A few things to adjust are:

- Anti-Roll Bars - these can be adjusted for both front and rear. As a general rule of thumb, a track as twisty as this will have quite high ARB. This will help with a quick turn in, but high ARB costs you mid corner grip. For circuits with longer corners, the ARB would be lower, otherwise you would lose grip mid way through the corner. If you want more grip on initial turn in, then raise the ARB, but for more grip for the remainder of the corner, lower the ARB.

-Spring Rates - The softer (or lower) the spring value is, the more grip your car will have overall, but it will mean that your car bounces more and you run the risk of bottoming out. It will also make your car feel slightly more sluggish on turn in, so aim to dial this is first before using other things to fine tune the grip you have at different points.

-Ride Height - For more front grip, you could lower the front ride height or raise the rear. However, as I mention in the spring rate sections, make sure that the car isn't bottoming out if the car is too low.

-Tyre Pressures - Similarly to spring rates, lowering the front pressure will help with overall grip, but will also make the car feel more sluggish on turn in. It can also affect tyre life, so make sure to understand the changes you make before using it in an official session.

Segment 1

☐ To begin, your braking here is perfect. You brake at the exact same point as the reference lap and your brake trace is practically identical. However, your entry speed is around 2mph faster, so you understeer slightly more on the way into the corner. This means that you can't rotate the car quite as well, and you lose all your time under acceleration. Focus on hugging the inside kerb for as long as you can before accelerating way. This will make sure you get the maximum rotation possible.

Segment 2

☐ We can see a similar story here. Your braking actually happens slightly early here, and you don't quite apply as quickly as the reference lap. Your entry line is also much shallower and, as with turn 1, it pushes you wide on exit, compromising your acceleration. Aim to hug the kerb as much as possible, particularly for the last half of the corner due to the downward slope that this corner is on. Make sure you can maximise your exit here because of the straight that follows.

Segment 3

☐ This segment is driven flat out.

Segment 4

☐ This corner is driven very fast, so the goal is to keep the speed up as high as you can. The main point to focus on is your braking, as you hold the brakes slightly too long, scrubbing off too much speed. You could also take more of the inside kerb, helping you to brake even less by straightening your line.

Segment 5

☐ This corner is very similar to turn 3. Your braking is good, although you don't quite match the force of the reference lap. This, combined with your shallower entry line, means that you understeer and run wide during the middle part of the corner, costing you speed. This is the only area where I can see an improvement.

Segment 6

☐ Your inputs here are very nice, aside from your braking. There is only one small issue with the release of your brakes. I notice a small hump on your brake graph, and it looks like you were apprehensive about turning in slightly. This meant that your minimum speed was lower than the reference lap, and this is where the time is lost. I know you have struggled with fine-tuning the front grip as well, so maybe the changes mentioned in the setup section will help.

Segment 7

☐ There is only a tiny difference in this segment, but you can afford to take a slightly wider line on the way into the corner. You also hold the brakes for slightly too long, so a short jab of the pedal would help more here.

Segment 8

☐ You have a slightly wider exit to the previous corner than the reference lap, which means that your entry for this corner is now shallower. This brings your apex speed down, and it means that you can't get on the throttle quite as fast as the reference lap. For the entry of this corner, try and keep most of your car towards the left half of the track.

Segment 9

☐ This segment is driven flat out.

Segment 10

☐ You have driven this segment very well, and you've gone quicker than the reference lap. See if you can shorten the time spent off the throttle, but this segment is already very well optimised.

Segment 11

☐ For this segment, the only real area to improve is your braking. You start braking ever so slightly earlier than the reference lap, and you release the brakes slightly later. Try to minimise the time spent on the brakes, and don't be afraid to use all available road on exit.

Segment 12

☐ Your line on entry could be slightly wider, and this would help with your turn in. Similarly to turns 2 and 5, you get a slight amount of understeer in the latter half of the apex, stopping you from accelerating quite as quickly as the reference lap. Try to hug the kerb here as well.

Segment 13

☐ This corner is a particularly tricky turn. It slightly reduces in radius meaning that you have to keep slowing more and more as you go round. There is also a large straight that follows, so exit speed here is crucial. You take a much shallower line on entry than the reference lap, hugging the pit wall much more. Unfortunately this means that you don't have as straight an exit, so your speed will be compromised. Try to take a wider entry for this corner. This will not only help you carry more speed into the corner, but it will also help you to get a straighter exit.
