Straightening the wheel on the exit of a corner isn't just a necessity, it's a fundamental technique that can make or break your lap times. Let's break it down for you with some technical insight.

First off, when you straighten the wheel, you're effectively aligning your tires with the direction of travel. This minimizes tire scrub, reducing both wear and rolling resistance. Translation? You're maximizing grip and minimizing drag, which means faster acceleration and higher top speeds both in the corner and on exit.

But it's not just about speed. Straightening the wheel also allows the suspension to settle back into its optimal geometry. This means the car is more stable and predictable, giving you better control as you power out of the corner. Plus, a properly aligned car puts less stress on the tires, minimizes tread wear thus helping them maintain their grip throughout the entire lap.

Gradually increase throttle as you unwind the steering wheel to maintain traction and prevent the car from oversteering or understeering. In wet or slippery conditions, be even more gentle with the throttle to avoid wheelspin.

Understanding the telemetry

Check the steering wheel graphic in the telemetry whilst having the Diff to Ref visible. If you notice that there is a pronounced increase in the angle of the wheel compared to the Reference Lap and the Diff to Ref chart shows a sharp upward angle then this will be a good indication that you are failing to straighten the wheel enough. This is especially true and often more aggressive in the initial engagement of the throttle out of the corner.

  • Be mindful of weight transfer: Understand how weight transfer affects your car's dynamics. In rear-wheel drive cars, the weight shifts to the rear during acceleration, so be prepared to modulate throttle to prevent excessive wheel spin. In front-wheel drive cars, the weight transfers to the front during acceleration, which can cause understeer if you're too aggressive with throttle application.
  • Adapt to different track conditions: Adjust your driving technique based on track conditions. In dry conditions, you can be more aggressive with throttle application and steering input. In wet or slippery conditions, prioritize maintaining traction by being smoother with inputs and choosing a wider but safer line through the corner to avoid standing water potentially near the kerbs.
  • Visual cues: Just like you did for your brake marker and turn in point. Use visual cues such as track markers, curbing, or reference points to gauge when to start unwinding the wheel. These cues can help you anticipate the exit and make adjustments accordingly.
