Introduction

"The timing of getting on the throttle is crucial. Too early and the car is prone to understeer, too late and you'll fail to achieve a fast lap time."

The theory of the driving discipline

Just like braking there are a multiple of techniques, decision and environmental factors that will change and challenge you and your driving through various corner types and various car characteristics.

In this final assessment we are look for near perfection in the acceleration phase of a corner.

This key areas should be your focus every time you are practicing and every time your are competing.

1. A smooth throttle application is key. Without this traction will be compromised. Sudden or aggressive throttle inputs can overwhelm the tires, causing them to lose grip and leading to wheelspin or sliding. Smooth application helps maintain optimal traction.

2. Gear choice can make or break your lap time. Lower gears provide more torque, which is essential for accelerating out of corners quickly. However, too much torque can cause wheel spin. Selecting the correct gear balances power delivery and traction. Also, staying in the optimal RPM range ensures the engine operates efficiently, maximizing acceleration and speed. We have all chosen the wrong gear multiple times. Again, smooth gear changes in the correct range, will deliver the power the car has to offer as optimally as possible.

3. Know the track and it's limits. If there is one area where you'll see Pros time and time again testing, it is the track limits. The correct racing line and using the whole track are crucial for maximizing speed and maintaining optimal tire grip. The ideal racing line allows you to carry the most speed through corners by entering wide, hitting the apex, and exiting wide, ensuring the best possible grip and consistent handling. Just a few centimetres wider on the entry and knowing the kerbs can really help in maintaining high cornering speeds and prevents understeer or oversteer. Using the entire track width increases the radius of your turns, this reduces the lateral load on the tires, improving traction and enabling earlier acceleration. Understanding these physics and how they affect the car's and track's potential, will give you a smoother transitions between braking, turning, and accelerating, ultimately leading to significant lap time reductions and improved overall performance.

We are looking for fast, smooth acceleration in all corner types. Again, it is a cat and mouse game of examining the telemetry and comparing against the reference lap. Note their line and acceleration point. How does the Diff to Ref react. Is the gear your main issue, or a mixture of acceleration speed and racing line?

  • The MX-5 is a good example of a car that doesn't like to be over-revved. Change gear around the 6450-6500 mark don't wait until it reaches 6700+ as the torque just isn't there
