Jason Hughes - Training Plan No. 2

Goal

Improve race technique.

Conclusion

Great number of laps and your consistency is quite good but can be improved a little each session. This is a continual process and will be important with every practice session and every race.

Assigned Task

A technical assignment this week. Check to see if you are actually dragging the brake (resting on it) or in fact there is a mechanical issue. If you feel that you aren't doing anything wrong then it might be worth adding a small amount of deadzone on the lower end of the brake. Just set it in the settings page. This won't hinder your driving and will stop the car often riding on 0.5-1% brake.

1st key mistake: On the brakes for too long
Why it matters

You often reduce your corner speed more than you have to by staying on the brakes for too long. If this is to affect the car's balance, please apply way less pressure.

How much of a problem it is for you

20% of the mistakes this week were due to staying on the brakes for too long

See an example in your own sessions

An example can be found in segment 6. You'll see that you remain on the brakes longer than the reference lap and it appears that you are also resting your foot on the brake way before the corner.

Learn to improve

Your development of finding the correct braking point. It is now important to trust your speed through the corners and continually test the limits of the car. Use your senses to gauge tire traction and note how early you can come off the brakes. Excessive braking ruins lap times.

2nd key mistake: Pressing the brake pedal too slow
Why it matters

To 100% understand your desired braking point you need to get on the brake with the same power each time. Without this the braking point can never be fixed in your mind.

How much of a problem it is for you

17% of your errors are linked to slow speed of braking.

Segment 5 is a good example of how you apply your throttle. Not bad but it is important to have a steeper front half of the curve to slow the car down quickly.

Learn to improve

This could be linked to your setup, if you feel that you are doing everything possible to brake quickly but you are still struggling to match the reference lap.  An option is to lower the pressure required to hit 100% braking on your pedals.  You'll still be able to trail brake just the fidelity will be slightly less.  Overtime, if necessary, it can be increase.  Definitely worth looking at.

3rd key mistake: Braking too early
Why it matters

Braking too early will mean that the car is slowing down sooner than necessary. This is often the No.1 reason why a lap time is off pace.

How much of a problem it is for you

With approximately 22% of all of your mistakes being this one, it is a very common mistake and easily fixed with more practice and lap consistency.

See an example in your own sessions

A good example can be found in segment 2.  You are braking too early, test the limits of the car by adjusting your braking point. This early braking is costing you two tenths in your lap time. Obviously if this is on multiple corners then it quickly adds up.

Learn to improve

Drive 3-5 laps, check your analysis then write down each segment where you are braking too early.  Try to concentrate on these corners by adjusting your braking point.  Remember brake straight then turn in with trail braking.
