Bram Vandewalle - Training Plan No. 1

Goal

Improve lap times and switch to manual gears.

Conclusion

Great to get the training started and looking at the telemetry there are a number of items where improvements can be made straight away. Learning your gearing is a must when you start training on a new track. This means examining which is the lowest gear each segment is driven in and then trying to emulate this on track.

Assigned Task

Apart from remembering your gearing. Your first assigned task is to really get to feel your brakes and try to correct your braking mistakes. It is is important to brake hard and fast for most corners. This is very important, as it minimises the braking phase and allows for a longer time as full gas. Practice stomping on the brakes and getting those brakes to 100%, thus utilizing the full potential of the brakes. As long as you don't loose traction then the harder you brake the better.

1st key mistake: Gear too low
Why it matters

There are many situations on track where it is better to run the car in a higher gear to gain full potential from the engine.

How much of a problem it is for you

Gearing errors in general accounted for over 18% of your total errors.

Segment 6 shows how using 4th gear which is constantly one gear lower than the reference lap.

Learn to improve

If the car is feeling sluggish or is revving too high, this is a good indication that you are in too low a gear.  If you feel this might be the case, start a new session and drive two laps, first in the suspected wrong gear and then one gear higher.  Check out your live delta, it'll give you your answer.

2nd key mistake: Too early on the throttle
Why it matters

Being too early on the throttle is a contradictory mistake. You want to get the full gas quickly but not at the expense of possible wheel spin or having to come off the gas.

How much of a problem it is for you

Not a large mistake at only 12% of your errors through this training session.

Segment 7 highlights that you are getting on the throttle too early here.

Learn to improve

Each time that there a lift or dab, it indicates a lack of smoothness.  Very hard to achieve perfection but any time that you have a change that is more than 10% pressure needs to be looked at. Be patient getting on the throttle each time, if you start accelerating too early you'll create understeer and struggle to stay on track, or you'll need to lift the gas pedal.

3rd key mistake: Not enough brake
Why it matters

Occasionally you fail to get full pressure on the brake, forcing you to brake just that little bit longer.

How much of a problem it is for you

Nearly 40% of your mistakes are braking errors. 17% of these are related to not enough brake force.

See an example in your own sessions

Please check out segment 10, your braking is around 60%. This means that you have to stay on the brakes longer to get the car slowed for the corner.

Learn to improve

It is generally better to get to full braking quicker than using less braking and having to stay on the brakes longer.  Full brakes (no lockup), time your turn in, then trail brake into the corner turn
