Leo Hwang - Training Plan No. 1

Goal

Improve driving technique.

Conclusion

Great to get this first session under the belt. There are plenty of areas where rapid improvements can be made. Most important is to start turning off the assists so that you can experience driving the car as it should be driven.

Assigned Task

In these beginning phase there are a many things to try and take onboard. Your current mistakes that are mainly down to learning the tracks and learning basic driving techniques. When should I brake? Which gear should I be in? Drive only a few laps then refer back to the reference lap and check whether you are changing down to the correct gear. If necessary write the segments gear down and then try to copy this on your next session. This is also the case for braking points, try to brake a little later and look for markers on track to make sure you brake at the same point each lap. Again, checking the reference lap to confirm if you are on track.

Finally, it is important to start turning off your assists. One approach is to turn off everything and build up your speed again. This is quite extreme and isn't for everyone. If you are running racing line, turn this off first. The reason is that by turning off the racing line you are forcing yourself to study the corner to choose how to drive it. This is absolutely the best way to get faster. Next would be to turn off your automatic gears. It'll be hard at first but it really is more rewarding and fun to have full control of the car.

When you send in your next session, let us know all your current assists levels (like your first email) so that we can determine what to turn off next.

1st key mistake: Gear too low
Why it matters

As you brake through the corner and then turn your thoughts to the exit, there is a tendency to feel the lower gear will give you a faster exit. This can be counterproductive when pushing the upper limits of the engine

How much of a problem it is for you

30% of your errors are from too low a gear.

See an example in your own sessions

Segment 9 shows how using 6th gear whilst the reference lap stays in 7th. There is a lot of time lost because of this as well as braking too heavily at the beginning of the corner.

If the car is feeling sluggish or is revving too high, this is a good indication that you are in too low a gear.  If you feel this might be the case, start a new session and drive two laps, first in the suspected wrong gear and then one gear higher.  Check out your live delta, it'll give you your answer. Double check which gear choices the reference lap driver makes to understand where you are dropping too low

2nd key mistake: Braking too early
Why it matters

A good mistake to make since it's easy to fix! You simply need to find a slightly later braking point to maximize your lap time potential.

How much of a problem it is for you

With approximately 10% of all of your mistakes being this one, it is still a very common mistake and easily fixed with more practice and lap consistency.

Look at where you brake on segment 8, as a whole, the corner is well handled. There are a number of factors that cost you a few tenths but mainly it is the braking point.

Learn to improve

It can be a fine balance between too early and too late on the brakes.  Sometimes, depending on the corner, 5cms difference in braking point can lose you a tenth of a second.  Even though you got on the brakes earlier than the reference lap, they managed to get to full throttle more aggressively and quicker than your first half of the corner.

3rd key mistake: Too much braking
Why it matters

Braking too much is lost tenths on track. The balance between slowing enough for a corner and retaining optimal grip requires practice and experience, often a corner can be taken faster than expected.

How much of a problem it is for you

10% of your errors are related to being on the brakes for too long.

See an example in your own sessions

Segment 11 is a good example of how you apply your throttle.  You top out at 100% and stay there a lot longer than necessary. On fast corners it sometimes is more important to maintain your speed than to slow your car down by braking later.

Learn to improve

The brakes are so powerful that you must be incredibly careful not to remain on them for too long. The advantage of the Track Titan platform is that you can visualise this easily to see where these errors are developing. Try to be quicker with your feet. The motion of swapping from braking to accelerating needs to be fast and controlled.
