Myles Grayson - Training Plan No. 1

Goal

Improve driving technique and prepare for league races

Conclusion

Great first session and plenty of quick wins to start to lower your lap times.

Assigned Task

Really study the lower gear that the reference lap uses on each of the segments. Try to remember all these and mimic on your own laps. A lot of time is easily lost by being in too low a gear as this basically handicaps the car from using the full force of it's engine when accelerating. Drive 3 laps, then check back to the reference lap. Write down how many segments you did in the correct gear. Repeat with another 3 laps. Finally drive a further 10 laps, taking into account all the suggestions below.

1st key mistake: Gear too low
Why it matters

As you brake through the corner and then turn your thoughts to the exit, there is a tendency to feel the lower gear will give you a faster exit. This can be counter productive when pushing the upper limits of the engine.

How much of a problem it is for you

22% of your mistakes are based around using too low a gear.

See an example in your own sessions

A good example can be found in segment 1. When you hover over the speed chart, the gears change on the little steering wheel. The reference lap doesn't drop below 3rd gear on the corner.

Refer back to the reference lap to get tips on gear changes and also learn and watch for the upper limits of the revs with the HUD.

2nd key mistake: Pressing the brake pedal too slow
Why it matters

Absolutely crucial to get to 100% braking fast.

How much of a problem it is for you

20% of your errors are related to slow braking. Overall 24% of all your errors are categorised as braking errors.

The signature curve of your braking is similar across most of your segments.  Segment 9 is a good example where you are slow with your braking. A less steep rising angle and not getting to 100% braking.

Learn to improve

This could be linked to your setup, if you feel that you are doing everything possible to brake quickly but you are still struggling to match the reference lap then consider adding a small dead zone at the top end of the brake. If you feel it is just being a little gentle on the brakes then practice stomping down on the brake to get to 100% braking quicker. Listen and feel to when your car is losing traction this is when you need to start your trail brake into the corner.

3rd key mistake: Too late to full throttle
Why it matters

Full throttle is where the speed is. As long as you have control, the general aim is to get to full throttle as quickly as possible.

How much of a problem it is for you

With 12% of your mistakes arising from 'late to full throttle', it is now important to study this area

See an example in your own sessions

Segment 8 is a good example of how you apply your throttle. Trusting your car will help to attain the throttle curve that the reference lap is able to achieve.

Learn to improve

Take a moment to watch one of our videos that emphasises the need to get to full throttle quickly.  Think smooth but fast, on /off the throttle will nearly always be slower than quick and smooth.
