Joseph Tran - Training Plan No. 1

Goal

Improve to league level racing.

Conclusion

Great lap times. Interesting to see these good times which still have some basic improvements possible. Be very conscious that when you brake on a high speed corner, that you don't brake too hard. This will slow the car down more than necessary and here will be your biggest lap time improvements.

Assigned Task

Concentrate on nailing your braking points. Get these correct then you'll find it better and easier to increase your time to 100% throttle. Have patience when deciding when to get onto the throttle and use the reference lap to see when this takes place.  Also to make sure that you find the best gear, write down the lowest gear that the reference lap uses in each segment and then try to copy this for all segments. At the moment too many of the segments are taken in too low a gear. This will be costly in a race, as the tyre wear will be noticeable.

1st key mistake: Too late to full throttle
Why it matters

Full throttle is where the speed is. As long as you have control, the general aim is to get to full throttle as quickly as possible.

How much of a problem it is for you

26% of all of your mistakes are due to getting to 100% too slowly.

See an example in your own sessions

An example in segment 6, getting to full throttle will be quicker and can shave up to two tenths off your time.

Learn to improve

Here is a video explaining the importance of getting to full throttle quickly.

2nd key mistake: Too harsh braking
Why it matters

Similar to too much braking and both affect the weight balance on the car. By stomping the pedal, the weight is shifted forward and control is trickier.

How much of a problem it is for you

A bit more than 24% of your mistakes are related to this so it's worth paying attention to.

A good example can be found in segment 1.

Learn to improve

Hard and fast braking is very useful, however be mindful that on high speed corners it is important not to brake too much. Try to use less than 100% braking in these situations. Tricky but with a bit of dexterity it is possible.

3rd key mistake: Gear too low
Why it matters

There are many situations on track where it is better to run the car in a higher gear to gain full potential from the engine.

How much of a problem it is for you

This mistake happens a lot, 16% of your mistakes can be attributed to this.

See an example in your own sessions

An example can be found in Segment 5. Notice how the reference lap chooses to get into each gear quicker than yourself.

Learn to improve

You'll be surprised how much time can be lost by being in the wrong gear. Very important to test this, either by referring to the reference lap or by looking at the deltas when you drive. Carrying speed and staying in a higher gear can often be the difference of 0.3 - 0.5 seconds on your lap time!
