Ross Heatherill - Race Plan No.1

Conclusion

Some great lines on display here, although it seems to be a theme that you could extend the track on exits more. There's a concept called exit loading, where the car only just has enough grip on exit to avoid running off the track. Try to aim for this to happen, particularly at corners such as Les Fagnes and Campus. Slowly build up the throttle earlier and earlier to get a feel for how the car reacts on exit. One more thing to focus on would be trail braking. Try to aim to start slowly releasing the brakes as you turn the wheel more.

Set Up Advice

Spa is a circuit that relies on your car being stable through longer corners, but fast in a straight line. Focus on suspension, keep the front end nimble but make sure the rear will always follow you. Correct wing angles and anti-roll bars are a staple of a good Spa setup.

--> Track Titan website - Segment analysis <--

Segment 1 - "La Source"

☐ One thing to note is that you brake much later than the reference lap. The exit of turn 1 is crucial because there's a long stretch of full throttle running afterwards. Braking this late means that you run wide through the corner and can't get the same exit the reference lap. Taking a look at the brake trace, you also start turning while you're still at full throttle, which will add to the understeer. Try to focus on easing off the brakes before you turn in, and straightening the car as soon as you can in order to maximise speed through the next few sections.

Segment 2

☐ No problems here.

Segment 3 - "Eau Rouge / Raidilion"

☐ Judging by your line, you hug the kerb up the hill for longer than the reference lap. Try to reduce the amount you steer, and straighten the corners as much as you can. Don't be afraid to use the inside kerb at the crest of the hill

Segment 4 - "Kemmel / Kemmel Straight"

☐ No problems here, but your racing line is very wide going round the kink. Try to hug the inside. It will only be a small gain, but it's an easy one to achieve.

Segment 5 - "Les Combes"

☐ Unfortunately the data seems to have some kind of error.

Segment 6 - "Maimedy"

☐ Unfortunately the same data error happens here.

Segment 7 - "Bruxelles"

☐ Your line here is much wider than the reference lap, but it seems like you could use more of the track on corner exit. While you're setting up well for the next corner, you don't have to sacrifice your exit of this corner quite as much. Aim to exit the corner using 3/4 of the track. This may mean that you need to apex earlier. Again, you seem to be at 100% brake while you're turning. In a corner like this, it will cause the front of the car to push you wide. Try to focus on slowly bleeding off the brakes as you turn in.

Segment 8 - "Speaker's Corner"

☐ While the line looks great, you could possibly afford to brake a little bit less. You hit 100% brake force quickly and briefly, while the reference lap tops out at only 25% force. Even if you need to brake for slightly longer, the decreased braking force will also help rotate the car, helping you further round the corner.

Segment 9 - "Double Gauche"

☐ There are quite big stutters in the data, making it hard to analyse properly.

Segment 10 - "Les Fagnes"

☐ Again, there are a few stutters at some crucial points on these corners, but from what I can see, you're using much less track on the exit of this chicane. You need to be wary of running too wide because of the slippery astroturf, but you can afford to ride the kerb more.

Segment 11 - "Campus"

☐ You have an almost identical line to the reference lap on entry, but they run wider than you, and this will help them carry more speed up the hill. Focus on trying the same, using as much of the exit as you can to preserve speed on the run to the final chicane. You're at full braking force for longer than the reference lap as well, and this will cause understeer. Focus on bleeding off the brakes once you start turning in.

Segment 12 - "Stavelot"

☐ Again there are errors in the data, making it hard to analyse properly.

Segment 13 - "Courbe Paul Frère"

☐ There is a big stutter in the data, but the line here is fairly self explanatory. Just make sure to focus on the entry into Blanchimont as well.

Segment 14 - "Blanchimont"

☐ Your line on entry is OK, but again you're using less of the track than the reference lap. This means that you are steering more than you need to, and it will cost you speed. For a fast corner like this, there are 3 points you should always aim to hit; the outside entry kerb, the inside kerb, and the outside exit kerb. The inside kerb can be vicious here, so aim for the white line just in front of it, and make sure you stay consistently hitting those 3 points.

Segment 15 - "Chicane / Bus stop"

☐ Your line through the first corner is OK, and you even seem to set yourself up for the second corner better than the reference lap. After the heavy braking zone though, you stay at 100% braking while you turn in, focus on bleeding off the brakes as you turn in. Your throttle input is higher than the reference lap on the way into the second corner, and it means that you get understeer through the corner, whereas the reference lap lift off fully before turning in. They hit the apex, and as a result they have a straighter exit to accelerate with. Try not to use too much power between these two corners, it will make it hard to turn in for the second apex. Focus on hitting that second apex and straightening the exit as much as you can.
