Instructor Notes

19/08/2024 - 11/06/2026
We are ready to assess your practice from last week. Please provide us some laps and we'll check again on your next turnover day. To really learn a track in Sim racing, from our analysis of users data between 30-50 laps in a week are required to improve significantly (depending on track length).

The next Instructor notes will be provided when we have sessions to review. Thanks, and looking forward to seeing your improvements. 😁

We noticed that your logger isn't on the latest version and this might be affecting your sessions that are being recorded.  This article explains how to upgrade to the latest version, if the system hasn't managed to automatically upgrade you.

Previous Instructor Notes

This is always going to be a tricky skill to learn and this week you nailed it fantastic job, textbook! When you got 'in the groove' you were churning out lap after lap. Both at speed and also very consistently. As with all these plans and skills try to remember and build on it for the next assignment.

Extra - You frequently shift into a gear that's too low for the corner, which costs you time. Reflect on the gear choices from the reference lap and experiment with maintaining control in those gears. This should help improve your segment times. - example

----------------------

23/07/2024
Please drive more laps.  It isn't possible to get a fair and true reflection of this assessment without at least 30-50 laps being completed.  The instructors are ready to help you when you are ready.  Good luck and have fun on track

Extra - No assessment. Your sessions are not lining up with the data. Do more tracks and check your logger.

----------------------

08/07/2024
Still errors here. It is very important to push the boundaries of the track, as you improve it is this one of the best ways to find a tenth or two on track. For the time being though we will move on to your next assignment.

Extra - Try to drop your pace a bit. This will not only help you to avoid invalid laps, but it will also help you to get more consistent braking points and racing line, which will make your lap times more consistent.

----------------------

25/06/2024
Your lap times still aren't consistent enough. Try to do a longer stint (20+ laps) in a practice session, driving at around 90% of your maximum pace. This way you can safely stay within the limits to avoid invalidating lap times.

Extra - There are a few corners where you have room to be a bit more confident on the throttle. Here's an example of this. You held the throttle at around 85%, but you didn't get to 100% until after the reference lap. This will give you less speed out of the corner, and therefore a slower run down the next straight.

----------------------

10/06/2024
There are some good times, however also too many invalid laps. I appreciate that this is inevitable when training but it is worth really focusing on this technique as nailing lap after lap without invalid laps is critical in a race situation. It can be the difference between a drive through or not. Slow your driving down a little and really concentrate on the consistency with valid laps. A racing drivers main skill has to be able to achieve similar lap times lap after lap. Drop your speed 10% and achieve these valid laps to move on with your training.

Extra - Try not to get on the throttle too early. In this example you started accelerating halfway through the corner which forced you to lift off to make it around the corner, and you then couldn't get back on the throttle until a long time after the reference, giving you a much worse run down the next straight, costing you around 1 second in total.

----------------------

27/05/2024
Your racing lines are starting to look like you know what you are doing. In most situations we want to open up the entry and exit of the corner so that when we clip the apex the path we travel has the largest possible radius. This allows you to carry the most possible speed through the corner. There are exceptions, for example in corner complexes, where sometimes a compromise is required. There are a few corners where you are still entering too tight, which costs you minimum speed. Lets keep working on this as you go into the next challenge - Consistency.

Extra - Try to be smoother on the brakes. There are a lot of corners where you are on and off the brakes a lot in the braking zone. This will unsettle the car, giving you less confidence in the grip when you turn in to the corner. Here's an example.

----------------------

13/05/2024
Good control through the chicane. Chicanes are a great insight into a drivers skill level as, it requires a good mastery of all skills, very quickly. Your racing line is good and your mid chicane acceleration is great. Also try to be quicker getting on the throttle on the exits (not just in chicanes). Remember gear choice is especially important in chicanes due to accelerating from slow speeds.

Extra - We noticed you might be running an older version of the Track Titan logger. Please follow this link if you need help running the update https://intercom.help/track-titan/en/articles/7964105-how-do-i-update-my-track-titan-logger otherwise if you are on the latest version please contact keith@tracktitan.io and he'll get this working for you.

Nicely driven! You improved in these 4 key areas over the last few weeks. There will always to improvements and adjustments that you can make. It is all about fine tuning those braking points, racing line and throttle application. Your gears look decent but always check back to the telemetry. Learning really comes from driving, analysing and then driving again until you feel you've reached a wall then analysing again. This habit will really help you improve as quickly as possible.

Extra - Try not to get on the throttle too early, as this will likely cause the car to understeer and run wide, losing you a lot of time. Here's an example.

----------------------

16/04/2024
Your racing line is looking quite good, but you still need to work hard on your braking. You're often braking too early and your brake pressures are sometimes inconsistent (example). Also, you're sometimes a gear lower than you need to. Take some time to analyse your laps and your telemetry, it will surely help you improve for this assignment.

Extra - You're sometimes a bit on and off the throttle. Try to make smooth movements on the pedal and accelerate in a single smooth motion on the corner exits. It is quicker than having fast on and off inputs.
Here's a good example for you to take into account.

----------------------

01/04/2024
Good corner gear choices. It is often the case that people change down too far in a belief that it will be faster however, you nailed this. So you've reached a milestone - well done! Your next weeks training, will be assessed on how well you perform with all the plans that you have driven so far. You are currently doing really well and should find this straight forward, just strive to increase your consistency and push for slightly quicker lap times. Good luck!

Extra - Try to be a bit more confident with your throttle input. There are a few occasions where you aren't reaching 100% throttle until a long time after the reference lap, which is losing you quite a lot of time. Here is an example of this. Could you also check that your Track Titan logger is updated to the latest version? Instructions on how to do so can be found here.

----------------------

19/03/2024
Very nice, be careful how much pressure you apply on fast sweeping corners, it is important not to lose too much speed by braking too heavily, generally you are OK at this but a couple of mistakes were visible. And beware that your brake pressure was looking a bit inconsistent in one or two corners.A quick check back at the reference lap will really help find these little wins.
Next up is your first acceleration technique, good luck and keep knocking out those laps! 💪

Extra - We're still seeing the same issues, so we'll keep the same comment with a different example - You are often turning your steering wheel way too much in the corners. By doing this, you're making the front tyres slide on the track and lose a lot of traction. Reduce your steering input by a lot, then slow down your pace a little and increase the steering angle lap by lap. Once you feel the car doesn't want to turn anymore after you increase the steering angle, you've found the grip limit of the tyres. This is usually a full 180 degrees for hairpins, but it can vary from car to car.
Take a look at this example and compare your driving with the reference lap.

You still need to work a bit more on those brake pressures. You sometimes get it just right, but are often on and off the brakes and also braking too hard in certain corners.

It appears that your recordings from iRacing are a bit corrupted and we are not able to make a good assessment from them. For support, please contact Track Titan support to check is the issue has been solved for the future.

Your speed on the pedal is very good, however you're having too much inconsistency with your brake pressure. You're on and off the pedal a lot, so try to hold that brake pressure a bit more consistently.

Extra - Still on your brake pressure, try to also carry the brakes a bit further into the corner. When you start turning into a corner, you should release the brakes more gradually to keep the car balanced and to be able to carry more speed into the corner. Here's an example for you to take a look at.

You're usually doing well in heavy braking zones, but you still need more practice controlling your braking in places where you don't need to brake at all, or brake very little. Don't forget that sometimes it's beneficial to brake earlier and a bit lighter to keep the car balanced and to avoid losing grip on the front wheels.

Extra -

The Toyota GR86 and the MX-5 are light cars without a lot of power. This means that, although they are nimble, if you lose too much speed, it's going to take a while to get it back. The philosophy of these cars is brake as little as possible, turn as little as possible to avoid scrubbing off extra speed and get the best exit possible out of the corners, so late apexes and double apexes are usually the best approaches. These are all things you can do to avoid losing speed and unsettling the car (which of couse will cost you speed and time). Don't forget to analyse your laps to see where you're losing time.

Here's an example of where you braked a lot and lost quite a lot of speed there.

30/10/2023
Fantastic racing line and you are hitting nearly all of your apex's. Practice trying to take a slightly later apex and see how this affects your deltas. Also have in the back of your mind the angle / direction of the car as you take the apex. The more it is facing in the direction of the coming straight the quicker you'll be able to effectively get on the throttle. Your throttle engagement should generally be within two car lengths of your apex.

Extra -

We're still seeing the same issue, so we'll leave the same comment with a different example - Try to get wider on the entry, this will allow you to make the corner just that little bit shallower which in turn will allow you to maintain a faster minimum speed - example

Very nice, your braking points are sharp and spot on most of the time. Important! Be careful how much pressure you apply on fast sweeping corners, it is important not to loose too much speed by braking too heavily.

Great to have you onboard and hope you are ready to do some training! The process is super simple. Every two weeks you'll have an assigned task which your instructor will set based on our training schedule. Each task will be an important driving technique that you'll need to master in order to progress to the next discipline.

Having assessed and written hundreds of training plans, Track Titan instructors have analysed our drivers achievements and pitfalls and the results show that a consistent application of the driving techniques is crucial to progressing as a good, fast and safe driver. Therefore, every two weeks you'll be tested for consistency and quality of the chosen technique. If the instructor feels that more time on track is required to progress then no problem, hone your skills, dig deep and you'll soon pass to the next discipline.

We have assigned you a turnover day, on this day you'll be able to see your feedback from the instructors (it could be the next day aswell), your score for the assigned task and your progress.

Please follow the advice in the assigned task and practice this race technique as much as you can in the next fortnight. Remember, referring back to the reference lap and in particular the telemetry data to see how you need to perform to perfect a skill will aid your progress and competence.

The Instructors will look through the sessions and laps you have completed over the last fourteen days. Priority will be given to hot lapping and time trial laps if available. We understand that with changing conditions (tyre wear, weather, fuel load etc.) the ability to perform consistently and with quality similar to the reference lap alters. This is taken into account with all our assessments. Needless to say, the more laps driven the better your training and practice will be and the better the understanding of your current abilities.

If you have a different motivational goal, please let us know and we'll change it from "Improve driving technique"

Enjoy the training, enjoy the journey.

Yours sincerely,
The Instructors
