Introduction

Braking is a complex process that involves understanding and effectively managing the weight distribution throughout the car. By comprehending how weight shifts during braking, drivers can optimize traction, maintain control, and achieve maximum deceleration without compromising stability or inducing wheel lock-up. All for the goal of setting yourself up for a great exit from the corner.

The theory of the driving discipline

The weight distribution of a car affects braking performance and influences several important factors:

  1. Deceleration: The weight of a car directly influences its ability to decelerate. Heavier cars generally require more braking force to achieve the same rate of deceleration as lighter cars. This means that heavier cars may take longer distances to slow down or stop compared to lighter ones.
  2. Weight transfer: When braking, weight transfers from the rear to the front of the car, shifting the balance of the vehicle. The front tires gain more grip due to this weight transfer, allowing for better braking performance. In contrast, the rear tires experience reduced grip. Proper weight transfer management is crucial for maintaining control and maximizing braking efficiency.
  3. Brake system heat management: Braking generates heat, and the weight of the car affects the heat dissipation capabilities of the brake system. Heavier cars generate more heat during braking, requiring effective cooling systems to prevent brake fade. Brake fade occurs when excessive heat causes a reduction in braking performance due to the diminished friction between the brake pads and rotors.
  4. Tire grip: The weight of the car affects tire grip during braking. Heavier cars place more load on the tires, increasing the available traction and allowing for stronger braking forces. However, there is a limit to the amount of braking force that can be applied before the tires lose grip and start to lock up or skid. Proper weight distribution and braking technique are essential to optimize tire grip and prevent loss of control.

So, the important concept to understand is how to know you have unsettled the car, and why it is happening. Here are some common reasons:

  1. Rear-end instability: If the rear of the car feels loose or begins to slide out, it suggests that you have transferred too much weight to the front wheels during braking, resulting in reduced grip on the rear tires. This can lead to oversteer, where the rear of the car tries to swing around, potentially resulting in a spin.
  2. Front-end instability: On the other hand, if the front of the car feels light and unresponsive during braking, it indicates that you have not transferred enough weight to the front tires. This can lead to understeer, where the car tends to continue straight despite steering input, making it difficult to negotiate corners.
  3. Wheel lock-up: When braking excessively or abruptly, the wheels may lock up, causing them to skid instead of rotating freely. This can be accompanied by a loss of steering control and a significant increase in braking distance. Locked wheels are a clear sign that the car has been unsettled during braking.
  4. Uneven tire wear: If you notice unusual wear patterns on your tires, such as excessive wear on the front or rear tires, it could be an indication that the weight distribution during braking has been uneven. Uneven tire wear suggests that the car's balance has been compromised, potentially due to improper braking technique or setup.

Extra Tips from the Instructors
  • Drive a car like the MX-5, try to brake hard, then smoothly. This will give you a feel for how braking power can affect the car. You'll find that if you brake too hard you might be slowing this car down too much a brake pressure of 80% will suffice
  • In GT3 or F1, you can try lifting off the brakes abruptly in slow corners to see how the car reacts. Try then to be smooth getting off them and notice the differences.
  • Stand still and try to get off the brakes smoothly as well as pressing them smoothly. This is so you can practice a habit and not need to think about it when driving.
