Conclusion

The racing line improvement has been very successful. When we move up to faster cars this will naturally falter a little. As braking issues are now costing you the most time on track we'll be concentrating on these next.

Assigned Task

The nimble MX5-Cup was perfect for studying a racing line, however it is too perfect for braking practice. This is because the brakes are just too good for the size and weight of the car. i.e. it is too forgiving. The Nissan 370z Nismo however is a different story. Drive as much as you want with the Nismo at the Red Bull Ring GP, a circuit with changing elevation and many different corner styles will help improve your braking.

1st key mistake:

Braking too early

Why it matters

Most likely a consequence of practising your racing line. Now is important to strengthen your braking skills.

How much of a problem it is for you

Nearly 50% of all mistakes are grouped in braking issues. With braking too early accounting for over 40% of them.

See an example in your own sessions

The racing line graph sometimes shows a simple view of how you are braking too early.  Segment 1 shows that there is room for braking later.

Learn to improve

Set yourself a braking point, whether it be a marker, kerb or other peripheral object.  It is time how to push the car to the limit and see whether you need to brake a little earlier or later than your brake marker.

2nd key mistake:

Too late to full throttle

Why it matters

Full throttle is where the speed is. As long as you have control, the general aim is to get to full throttle as quickly as possible.

How much of a problem it is for you

With 20% of your mistakes arising from 'late to full throttle', it is now important to study this area.

See an example in your own sessions

Segment 2 is a good example of how you apply your throttle.  The timing and consistency is good (just after the apex) but with the MX5 it is possible to be more aggressive with the pedal and push the car hard.

Learn to improve

Take a moment to watch one of our videos that emphasises the need to get to full throttle quickly.  Think smooth but fast, on / off the throttle will nearly always be slower than quick and smooth.

3rd key mistake:

Gear too high

Why it matters

Does the car feel sluggish or slow then time is being lost.

How much of a problem it is for you

15% of your mistakes are due to gear choice

See an example in your own sessions

This sweeping corner after the longest straight is perfect for carrying your speed.  However, on the graph you'll notice the reference lap pulls away from your lap due to finding a little more power in 3rd gear.

Learn to improve

If the car is really feeling sluggish then dropping down a gear is necessary.  Just remember though, did you need to drop down a gear because you'd broken too heavy into a corner.  This combination / balance should be addressed when working out the best gear for a corner.  Also, listen to the engine and check the rev counter, the clues are all there.
